July Birthdays: Part 2 - Nouville Smashers!

tennister Jay celebrated his birthday (25jul) during our playdate (22jul). the 'nouville smashers' members prepared some local dishes: sinigang na isdang lapad(paul, jun, jay), papaitan and dinuguan(greg). we were supposed to have a bbq but the pit area was booked on that day, too bad. coincidentally was mike son's (gabriel) 1st birthday and so, we had to split the group for a while as the celebrations were held in different units within nouville, concurrently after the games. sure mike's place has more happening (lucky i went), there were some neat ladies belting their fav karaoke tunes then we were later invited to sing along. after rendering a few songs we decided to shift to the other unit for jay's bash. kelvin gave a baileys but unfortunately was expired. it horribly looked like a flaky ice cream without the foul smell as the alcohol overpowers the rotten milk odour :)

OVERDRIVEN

CG Overdrive finally has come to end. If there's one important point from the talks/presentations we all in the CG industry can learn from, in my opinion it should be this:

SKIPPER ME

Because there are too many things happening recently, don't expect too much from me blogging in each and every detail. I won't announce that just yesterday, Federer defeated Nadal at Wimbledon final in a commanding fashion, that Andre Agassi announced that he'll be retiring after the next grandslam US Open.(Watch or read the news and find out for yourself). I'm not gonna blog about the Gamma ZO Sweet string with 62lbs i just strung on my racquet, that it was soooo comfortable (no shoulder pains) and evidently powerful enough for my game, that out of 4-doubles game i only lost 1, that i managed around 4-5 aces, and that i had no blisters after being out of action for the last 3wks (who cares?). I'm so sick about predictions and that i'm not gonna talk about Italy having overwhelmed France in the World Cup Finals just this morning. Though i might hint that the $150 pot went to the person who bet for France (coz nobody bet for Italy). I'm too busy nowadays so if you are someone whom i know, please think twice before you make a move, unless you wanna help like give me a back rub or something...i will need to mum for a while...but if you wanna know, what's keeping me busy? the answer is: i've been stalking websites of Rock d' Fort official photographers, hunting for Mesh Potatoes gig pics haha!!!(and here's one)...so till then...peace out!

Modelling Stefi

This is my first attempt to character modelling, so help me God.

Front and side references doesn't match (I could have tilted the camera slightly) but is good enough to establish a basic form:

They say the child's face is one of the most difficult to model. I agree, I'm stuck trying to create the right topology for the cheeks and nose:

Finally capped the face and now for tweaking.

BITS IN A WEEK

Big thanks to interns Zenghao and Daniel for helping us out for the past weeks...All the best to Yinyin on her future endeavours. This girl can really play basketball! Hope you still join us on our weekly games...Happy birthday Janet!!!...CG OVERDRIVE is coming, boss is this pass really worth $300???...Manny 'Pacman' did it again! He put down Larios twice but didn't manage a KO. My friend and former bandmate Bituin Escalante sang the national anthem. For 3-hrs, Pinoys got united to celebrate this glorious sporting event. I bet in five years, this boxer will be the next president of the Phils.

REPLACEMENT TENNIS STRINGS

Most likely candidates could be:
1. Luxilon Big Banger 16 Original:
-perfect for 98-100 racquet head size.
-a favourite among hardcourt and claycourt pros (Nalbandian, Coria, Ferrer, Ferrero)
-advertised features: gives more power, durable, show no loss of efficiency, don't move, impervious to atmospheric conditions.

2. Babolat Pro Hurricane, guage 15L:
-used by Nadal and Roddick, perfect for oversized rackets
-advertised features: polyester based durability string. New construction process called Technology XFP which utilizes Babolat's latest string material Xtrem Futur Polymer.
-the hell with the above technologies, i'm only considering based on trust, it being used by Nadal.

3. Luxilon Big Banger Alu Power 16L:
-used by Agassi, Kuerten, Gasquet, defenitely perfect for my Ti Radical OS as these players use the same family of racquet and head size.
-same features as Big Banger Original, only finer in gauge and offers better control.

4. Gamma ZO Sweet:
-i'm too comfortable to let go of this as i'm already quite happy with my game using this brand. been using it for the past 2yrs. if the issue is durability, i might try lowering my tension from 66 to maybe 60. and maybe by doing that will compromise control but will add more power to my game. hence, basic players start off with more control, then gradually adds power to their game as their level advances.

Useful references:
Pro Equipment Log: 2005 US Open Men Players
Pro Equipment Log: 2006 Australian Open

Note: Tensions above 38.5 are in pounds; 38.5 and below are in kilograms.

Now its time to hit the gear shops and compare prices.

REALITY CHECK!

Recently was on a rooftop of a building somewhere in Orchard with my bosses. Magnificent views, predominantly residential condos all over. One Boss shared a thought and goes like, "if one condo unit is surely more than a million plus, that makes the unit-owner a millionaire. a condo block will have at least 20-50 units, and so 50 millionaires per block. if we were to count how many blocks around the Orchard area, that would roughly be more than ten thousand millionaires living in the area. so what's the point being a millionaire if you are just one of them? it doesn't makes sense anymore."

Bassist departure from the Woohoos signifies an advent for better things to come. Be it for the Woohoos to be disbanded or to move on, its still for better things. Music, just like any other form of art should not be rushed, even if its for the sake of money. Goals should be clear. It will guide us to the right path. Leader, yes we need one but I better not be. I hate politics and i get sick eating it. I'm just another artist, that to me makes enough sense already. Point, everyone has and should be valid. But it has to be spoken out, and heard, otherwise it becomes pointless. Doubts, I have none with the Woohoos. Let's move on and just have fun playing good music.

Broke my string!

My string would normally last within 4-months. This time it broke after exactly 5-1/2-months.

Couldn't be lack of inspiration due to Andre's been inactive in the circuit these days. Nadal's been motivating me to hit balls harder and with more topspin.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
It's because normally, Dec-Jan is a slack period due to the long holidays. Plus the 3wks absence due to jammings. Now i'm contemplating on changing my brand of string. I have been using Gamma's ZO-sweet for the past 2yrs since it was introduced. It has given me terrific results however, its lifespan seems not that practical. I'm gonna make a study to justify whether to use a new brand or not. (To be continued)

Da Vinci Code

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
After watching and reflecting about this movie, i can say it did not moved me at all. It was to me like just another crime fighting mystery movie. Nice to see glorious architectures like the Rosslyn Chapel and Paris' Louvre Museum. Did it changed my faith? I didn't think so. I can somehow relate to Robert Langdon's experience when he was a boy, fell in a well and struggled for help till morning. Here it goes: When i was abt. 18yrs old i fell for this girl named 'Baet.' Her group of friends one day organized a swimming outing in 'Wawa Dam' in Montalban and i was invited to come along. My parents then didn't like the girl that much, i knew they won't allow me to go so i did without permission. Wawa dam is a river at a foot of a group of mountains. The river as the locals knew is haunted. Unknown to me, the river is known for having claimed so many lives of mostly strangers (according to the locals there). When we arrived i was too eager to show off my swimming skills so i was one of the first who tried the water. I swam from one side of the river to the other side, as i reach the other end, grabbed the rocky wall but somehow was slippery. I panicked and for about a minute i struggled to get a good grasp but was helpless. I was praying o my God pls. help me. I nearly drowned and thought that could be the end of me. Lucky, one of Baet's uncles saw me from the other end and quickly swam towards me for the rescue, am so ever thankful i'm still alive today. While changing i realized i had pinned a 'Mother Mary medallion' onto my swimming shorts. That medallion was part of the prize i won from an art competition (theme was "Mary and her role in Edsa Revolution) in Marist high school. Marist School by the way is run by Marist Brothers, a catholic congregation. I was told by Brother Flores during the awarding that the medallion was blessed by Pope John Paul II when he last visited Manila. Could that medallion did save my life? Somehow i lost that medallion, and all along I knew, that it was faith that saved me.
(as i just refreshed my memory, above was edited. The medallion prize was won from an art competition and not from an essay writing contest).

A Bamboo Blast, 4Jun06

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Thanks Ling for the complementary pass at Bamboo's gig at Bar None, Mariott(also extended thanks to Ling's guru 'cikgu Addy'). I really had a good time. Twas a sunday so wifey opted to stay home for an early rest, but she had a handphone stream of the perfomance.

Set started with a bang with 'Mr. Clay,' one of my fav Bamboo song. Another fav song, 'Masaya' they did last. Not certainly the last coz they gave two encore numbers, '214' and 'Much Has Been Said' (if i'm not wrong) , kindly granting the full-house crowd's request.

Things i appreciate from the performance is Bamboo's cool voice, Vic's absolutely ferocious drumming skills, and reliving the good 'ol 'Rivermaya classics.' Playing those hits brought back the glory days of RM, reminiscing the songs 'Kisapmata, Ulan, Hinahanap-hanap Kita and 214.' Other songs they did with equal power and crowd intensity are Halleluiah, Noypi, These days, (sorry i can't remember all).
From where i stand at the mosh area its too difficult to see Vic, the drummer. Occasional tip toeing doesn't help at all so i guess, i'm gonna have to wait till 17th & 18th Rockdafort to really have a chance to watch Vic's virtuoso with a clear unobstructive view. One thing i noticed from his cymbal setup he has inverted 'broken' splashes (2-tiers) on top of his right 'rock crash.' According to another drummer friend, broken cymbals create a distinct sound some pros incorporate to add uniqueness in their playing. Nope its not Bar None's coz before and after Bamboo's performance there was only one crash on each stand used by 'concave scream' and 'jive talkin'.

Heartrock Pinoy Singapore, 27May2006

Images courtesy of Getty (j/k)! Tks. dude Ramir Lorich Araneta!

'Twas probably the only and the best Pinoy gig ever staged in Singapore. From start till the end, fantastic! The good mix of repertoire by all bands surely has given the crowd a great deal of satisfaction. And the crowd is wonderful, indeed a great experience performing. Our band, 'mesh potatoes,' provided rock tunes of Juan dela Cruz, Razorback, The Dawn, Black Crowes, Creed and Pearl Jam. Followed by the group 'Launchbox' rendered pop rock tunes of Eraserheads, Wolfgang, Cardigans, Barbie Almabis favourites. Next was the group 'Quiverpool' with incredible R&B and soul acoustic covers of the Mraz, also did a few originals. Last band was 'Mr. Brosnan,' oozing with college rock tunes of Live, Vertical Horizon, etc.

And was the surprise finale, all performing band members paid a tribute song 'Noypi' by Bamboo. We purposely started out the intro as U2's 'With or Without You" then segwayed into the song proper. At first the crowd was like"what the hell, a U2 song for encore? they must be kidding!". But as the transition intro goes and bamboo's song becomes apparent, suddenly everyone has gone wild up on their feet singing every line that goes "Hoy! Pinoy ako! Buo ang aking loob, may agimat ang dugo ko!" The gig was supposed to wrap up after that song but Anthony a.k.a 'Mr. Heartrock' (organizer) requested one more encore song and so for the last time, we did the 'Pinoy Ako'(Big Brother). This time was double the intensity. My videocam's battery went dead halfway to the 'Pinoy Ako'song. Will upload more links after a good rest, whew! this week's been physically draining for me (and for the group too), but sure was worth it.

Me, Lousy Swimmer

ok, how 'bout another swimming-related stuff. have you ever dreamt seing yourself in one of those marketing videos (condo dev't)? well, i had experienced being one. flattering? yes, coz i thought i was chosen for the role coz i have the looks or built of ian thorpe. guess what? no, coz after the shoot and all, seing myself from the footages, i feel like a dumb-stupid trying hard model. 'good my face was 99percent submerged in water so face value is not that important. or else my manager could have charged more talent fee (dreamer lor!). dig deep into our company's site (www.vmw.com.sg) under 'video' and you'll find a few links of the company's demoreels. promise not to laugh when you see me face-to-face hor!

tidbits on today's happenings:
- 'mesh potatoes' practice went well, with a few minor tweaking. i suppose thursday jam will be much cleaner takes on the songs, then all is set for coming saturday's gig.
- managed to catch replay halftime towards penalty shootout game of liverpool vs. west ham championship. 'was hoping for west ham but the key striker who was instrumental to them being in the final was the one who fumbled the chance for the throphy.
- wow! just as i was writing this, anna kournikova's being interviewed in espn. could be planning a comebock. she's still hot!

tomorrow, looking forward:
- jam with quiverpool, launchbox, mr. brosnan selected members for the encore number (saturday's gig). hope we can nail that one song fast so that i can go home early. i need to catch up with some sleep.
- new project to start with, another interesting resort somewhere in the marianas.

future, looking forward:
- my sister grace's delivery due sometime next month. hope everything goes well, God bless!
- praying for mom's shoulder problem goes back to normal. God bless!
- excited on a new project by a famous australian architect, waiting to be activated
- hopefully be able to watch nba' remaining season games
- hoping to recuperate my sore right shoulder, hurt a week ago. i should do more slice first-serves than aiming for flat. it seems that my backhand tweaking experiment is giving good results, i should be winning more games if i can maintain that consistency as last time. hope to be back in tennis action next week.
- coldplay (july 10), indoor stadium
- great singapore sale (hoping for a good deal for an acoustic drumkit)
- stefi's starting a new workroup term in a new school next month. hoping she gets adjusted easily.
- 1st 'the woohoos gig', this group should be ready very soon! it's gonna damn rock your f_ckn' world!

the week and months ahead will be very hectic yet fun! yeah, keep it coming!!!

JM's Birthday

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
missed Braun Awt's (George's Band) rockin' Esplanade gig yesterday...went to Kuya Edwin's place for his younger son's (JM) birthday. the last time we went there Stefi was too eager to take a plunge to the pool but we didn't bring along her swimsuit. this time we made it sure Stefi won't be disappointed.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
too eager but not willing to jump in at first. maybe the water's a bit colder than the usual day swims. she can feel it on her feet standing by the edge of the pool, i'm already immersed waiting for her to jump in. she was taking too long i guessed she will not do it at all so i thought of a way how to bring her into the water. Stefi would prob'ly want some activity going on rather than just dipped into it so i figured i can use some sort of a toy, like a cup to attract her in. asked wifey to pass me a plastic cup, demoed how she can toy with it, placed it near the edge of the pool as a bait. as she gets near, got hold of the cup, immediately i grabbed her and before she knew it, she's already enjoying the swim with daddy.

The Future Card

Funny...

The multi-purpose Future Card will be the version of our NRIC in the near future. With an embedded smart chip, it can also be used as a passport, store our medical history, driver's license, act as an ATM card, serve as an electronic purse and even be used at the National Library... what ever you do with the card... you will be tracked!

It may also be a tracking device via GPS (Good or Bad, depending on the situation). However, a recent debate has brought to light the questionable control on access, potential information abuse and privacy infringement. As the debate rages on, a likely scenario when ordering pizzas in the near future might look something like this...

Thank you for calling Pizza Hut. May I have your…

Haloh! Pisar Hut-ah? Can I order-ah?

Can I have your Future Card number, sir?

It’s arh… hold on prease… arh… it’s 790230-88-5551.

Thank you, Mr. Tan Ah Beng. You’re calling from Block 345, Teck Whye Ave, #41-1522. Your home number is 6788988, your office number is 6912788 and your mobile is 96788688. Which number are you calling from?

Home-lah, wah, where you get all my phone numbers-ah?

We are connected to the Future Card system, sir.

OK-lah, OK-lah, can I order your seafood pisar?

That’s not a good idea, sir.

Why cannot-ah?

According to your latest medical records, you have high blood pressure and high cholestrol level, sir.

What? Wah-lau-eh… medical records also you know. So what you lecomend?

Try our low fat Hokkien mee pizza, I’m sure you’ll like it, sir.

Wah, how you know I like Hokkien mee-ah?

You borrowed a book titled ‘Popular Hokkien Dishes’ from the National Library last week, sir.

OK, OK, beh-ta-han. Give me three family size pisar. How much-ah?

That should be enough for your family of 10. The total is $45. How would you like to pay?

I pay by Future Card, can or not?

I’m afraid you have to pay us cash, sir.

Why?!

Your credit card is over the limit and you owe your bank $6,720.55 since October last year, sir.

Ka-nee-nah… everything also know, chia-lat!

That’s not including the late charges of your housing loan, sir.

OK-lah, I run to ATM to take cash before you come to my house-loh.

You can’t sir, based on the records, you’ve reached the daily limit on machine withdrawal today.

What?!

The latest withdrawal is $150 for 4D and Toto at 4:56pm, sir.

Never mind, just send the pisar. I borrow money from my Ah Mah. How long-ah?

45 minutes, sir. But if you can’t wait you can collect it with your motorcycle. You are only 5 minutes away.

Where got transport?

According to your Future Card, you own a Honda scooter, registration number FE 3288…

Ka-nee-nah!

Better watch your language, sir.

Why should I?

Remember on 15th July 1987 you were convicted of using abusive language on a policeman…

*[ugh}*

Is there anything else, sir?

Nothing. By the way, please remember to give me the 3 bottles of free Coke as advertised?

We would, sir. But based on the records, you are also diabetic…

I’m going to the hawker centre to tah-pao. Pisar no stock.

5:01 Band (Circa 1997)

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
tks Chris for inspiring me to dig up my former band's videos. it feels good to once again reminisce the good o'l days. the following video links were from a 3-night gig at Lucena city, (1997) a mardigras festival in conjunction with the city fiesta. to give you an idea, about 6 streets (abt. 200meters in length) in parallel were setup with a stage on both ends (so that's abt. 12 stages). people can roam from one stage to another. each stage is sponsored and ours was under the Asia Brewery banners. we only had 2-days rest after this gig then we had to fly to Roxas City for a 1-nite fiesta gig.

we call ourselves '5:01' a time reading (pm) that signals us to knock-off from work and head to the studio or gig. perpetual members are raffy, joji, eric, bituin, ariel and me. alternate members are myra and olan.

pardon for the amateurish videos as we only have our driver to entrust the videocam to. he was a chainsmoker and never got to cover even one song in full.

    Happy Happy Mother's Day!!!

    Prelude to Roland Garros

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
An interestng rivalry is brewing. Tennis buffs like me has something to look forward to when French Open (Roland Garros) begins the matches at the end of this month. At the time this is being written, ATP Masters Rome semi-final matches are in progress. Roger Federer playing against David Nalbandian (6-3, 3-6, 1-2), earlier on Rafael Nadal astounded Gael Monfils. Inevitable to say, it's prob'ly gonna be another Federer vs Nadal in the Finals. If it does, its gonna be another interesting hyperbattle as it was just about a month ago when both gentlemen played against each other in Montecarlo, where Nadal gloriously emerged against Federer. Whoever turns victor, i'd bet my cards on him for the Roland Garros crown.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Roland Garros (RG) is so far the only grand slam event that has eluded Federer. Even the great and retired Pete Sampras never had a chance to lift the RG trophy. Experts say Federer's game is perfect for any type of court (grass, hardcourt) including clay but yet why he's never won RG? Perhaps its because of the existence of much better claycourt players. Nadal for one is the best claycourt player today, being the RG defending champion is a testament to that. Nadal's getting better and better while Federer, already considered as one of the greatest players is too hungry for the RG crown. It will be an interesting battle should they meet in the finals at the current ATP Masters Rome, a prelude to Roland Garros.
